Standard Specification
- ASME/ANSI B18.2.2: Governs finished hex nuts in the US (domed/acorn style).
- DIN 1587: The German standard specifically for domed cap (acorn) nuts.

Material and Plating
- Steel with Zinc plated (clear, yellow chromate, black), Cadmium plated, Nickel plated, Chrome plated, Galvanized.
- Stainless Steel: For corrosion resistance (Grades 304/A2 and 316/A4 are most common).
- Brass: For decorative applications, marine use (good corrosion resistance), and non-magnetic properties.
- Nylon/Plastic: Used for electrical insulation, lightweight, and corrosion resistance.
Grades and Strength
- Steel Acorn Nuts are typically Grade 2 or Grade 5 (medium strength) in imperial sizes. High-strength grades (Grade 8) are less common due to the decorative/protective primary function.
- Metric Steel Acorn Nuts are typically Class 5 or Class 8.
