Common TypesDescriptions How it Works
 Pin Hex / Pin Torx (Security Star) This is one of the most common types. It looks like a standard hex or Torx socket, but it has a central pin protruding in the middle of the drive. A standard hex or Torx driver bit cannot fit into the socket because the pin blocks it. Removal requires a matching driver bit with a hole in the center to accommodate the pin.
 Spanner (Snake-Eye) The head has two small, round holes (or sometimes more) drilled opposite each other. Requires a special spanner driver that looks like a fork with two pins. Standard flathead or Phillips screwdrivers are useless against it.
 Tri-Wing (Tri-Point / Tri-Groove) The drive has three slots radiating from the center at 120-degree angles, forming a Y-shape. A standard Phillips or flathead screwdriver cannot engage the grooves properly. Requires a dedicated Tri-Wing driver bit.
 Torq-Set (Offset Cruciform) Similar to a Phillips drive but with the arms of the cross offset from the center. The legs are also asymmetrical. A Phillips driver will not seat correctly and will likely cam out (slip), stripping the head. Requires a specific Torq-Set driver.
 One-Way (Clutch Head) These screws have a drive that is designed for installation with a standard flathead screwdriver. However, the drive's design includes a "clutch" mechanism that allows the driver to slip when turned in the reverse (removal) direction. Easy to install, nearly impossible to remove with standard tools. Often, removal requires drilling out the screw head.
 5-Lobe (Pentalobe) Features a five-pointed star pattern. It is easily confused with a Torx (6-pointed) screw but is distinct. A standard Torx driver will not fit. Requires a specific 5-lobe driver.

Selecting the right screw depends on several factors:

  • Material: What are you fastening? (Metal, wood or plastic)
  • Environment: Will it be exposed to moisture, chemicals, or extreme temperatures? (This affects material and coating choice)
  • Load Requirements: What kind of stress will the joint be under? (Torque, tensile, vibration)

  • 8.8 / 12.9 / A2-70

    These markings indicate the grade or property class of the fastener, which defines its strength (e.g., tensile and yield strength). For instance, on metric bolts, the number "8.8" or "12.9" is common. On SAE bolts, you'll see radial lines or numbers like "Grade 5" or "Grade 8".
